privacy terms support

parla (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a mobile app that helps you learn slang, fillers, and everyday speech through short lessons and AI chat. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Short version: We collect the account and learning data needed to run parla. Chat messages you send are processed by our AI provider to generate replies. We do not sell your personal information. You can delete your account in the app at any time.

1. Who this applies to

This policy applies to the parla iOS (and, when available, Android) app, the parla.app website, and related services we operate, including our backend powered by Supabase.

2. Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Password (stored as a secure hash by our auth provider; we do not see your plaintext password)
  • Display name

Profile & preferences

During onboarding and in Profile, you may provide:

  • Languages you are learning and your active language
  • Learning goal and preferred pace
  • Pronoun / gender preference (used to tune chat address forms)
  • Whether to include swear / strong-profanity vocabulary in practice

Learning activity

To power progress, review, and home streaks, we store:

  • Words you have seen, quiz results, spaced-repetition state, and bookmarks
  • Daily lesson activity (e.g. slang drop / vibe check completions)
  • Streak days, shine score, words learned, and last-active date

AI chat content

When you use chat or tap-to-explain slang, the message text (and limited context such as recent chat history, selected persona, language, display name, gender preference, and swear-word preference) is sent to our servers and to our AI provider so we can generate a reply or explanation.

Chat threads in the app are kept on your device for the current app session and are not stored as a permanent chat archive in our database today. Message content is still processed by third-party AI infrastructure to provide the feature.

Device & technical data

  • Auth session tokens stored locally on your device (via on-device storage) so you stay signed in
  • Standard server logs that may include IP address, timestamps, and request metadata when you use our backend (from our hosting / infrastructure providers)

Website analytics

The parla.app marketing site may collect aggregated, privacy-oriented usage data (such as page views and referrers) through our hosting provider (currently Vercel Analytics). This is used to understand how the website is used. It is not used to track you across other apps or websites for advertising, and we do not sell it.

We do not request access to your camera, microphone, photos, or location.

3. How we use information

  • Create and secure your account
  • Personalize lessons, review queues, and chat personas
  • Generate AI replies and slang explanations
  • Track learning progress and streaks
  • Provide customer support when you contact us
  • Maintain, secure, and improve the app and website
  • Comply with law and enforce our Terms of Use

4. AI processing

Chat and slang-explain features use third-party large language model services (currently Anthropic, reached through our Supabase Edge Functions). Content you submit for these features is processed to generate a response. Do not share sensitive personal data (such as government IDs, financial account numbers, or health information) in chat.

5. How we share information

We share information only as needed to operate parla:

  • Supabase — authentication, database, and edge functions (hosting/backend)
  • Anthropic — AI model inference for chat and explanations
  • Apple / Google — as required for app distribution, purchases (if added later), or platform services
  • Hosting / analytics providers — to serve parla.app and understand aggregated website traffic
  • Service providers who help us host or operate the service, under obligations to protect your data
  • Legal / safety — if required by law, or to protect users, the public, or parla

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for third-party advertising.

6. Retention

We keep account, profile, and learning data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account in the app, we delete your profile and associated learning data from our database and remove your auth user. Residual backups or logs may persist for a limited period as part of normal operations, then expire.

7. Your choices & rights

  • Access / update: You can update many profile preferences in the app (language, gender, swear-word setting, etc.).
  • Sign out: Available in Profile.
  • Delete account: Profile → delete account. This permanently removes your account and associated app data we control.
  • Email us: hello@parla.app for privacy requests (access, correction, deletion, or questions).

Depending on where you live (for example under GDPR or CCPA/CPRA), you may have additional rights regarding your personal information. Contact us to exercise them. We will not discriminate against you for doing so.

8. Children

parla is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

The app may include optional strong language / swear vocabulary and AI chat. Parents and guardians should review suitability for younger users.

9. Security

We use industry-standard measures appropriate to our size and the data we handle, including encrypted transit (HTTPS), hashed passwords via our auth provider, and access controls on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

10. International transfers

We and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. If you use parla from elsewhere, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in countries that may have different data-protection laws than your own.

11. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and revise the “Last updated” date. Continued use of parla after changes means you accept the updated policy.
